WASA Introduced Water Meters, Sample Presented in Lahore Court – Will be Installed Soon

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has submitted a sample water meter before the Lahore High Court as part of its upcoming plan to install water meters in the city.
The case was heard by Justice Shahid Karim in response to petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and other citizens regarding smog control and environmental issues. During the hearing, WASA’s legal representative, Advocate Mian Irfan, informed the court that water meters will soon be installed across Lahore, with the first phase focusing on commercial properties.
To support the statement, a physical sample of the water meter was also presented in the courtroom. Justice Shahid Karim appreciated this step and acknowledged that water shortage is becoming a serious issue for Lahore. The court welcomed the meter installation plan as a positive development.
WASA’s lawyer further added that digging and preparation work for the installation will be completed by the end of July 2025, clearing the path for the installation of meters in commercial areas.
During the hearing, a member of the Judicial Commission revealed that the government is planning a new extension project for the Orange Line Train along the Canal Road. This raised alarms, as the project could potentially lead to the cutting down of trees.
In response, Justice Shahid Karim firmly stated that the court will not allow the removal of trees along Canal Road. He emphasized that Canal Road is one of the few areas in Lahore where natural beauty and greenery still exist, and protecting it is essential.
The Judicial Commission member also shared that the government has rejected the summary for health allowances for traffic wardens. Despite this, the member appreciated the government’s efforts to improve environmental protection.
Justice Shahid Karim expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Environmental Protection Department. He pointed out that despite the recruitment of a large number of staff, there is little visible presence on the roads, and vehicles emitting black smoke continue to operate openly.
The court demanded a detailed report from the department, specifically asking for:
- Deployment details of field teams
- Steps being taken to control air pollution
Furthermore, the Director General (DG) of the Environmental Department has been ordered to meet the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce immediately. The court instructed the DG to inform the industrial sector about environmental rules and regulations to ensure better compliance.
