Pakistan Mango Production Falls by 40% Amid Climate Challenges and Export Disruptions

Pakistan’s famous mango season is facing serious trouble this year. According to reliable statistics Pakistan’s this year mango production fallen by around 40% in comparison to previous year. Experts say this sharp decline is mainly due to climate change, extreme weather conditions, and dust storms that damaged mango orchards during critical growth periods.

On top of this, the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict has badly affected Pakistan’s mango exports. Iran is one of the biggest markets for Pakistani mangoes, and due to the war, trade routes and deliveries have been disrupted.

Farmers in major mango-growing areas like Punjab and Sindh have reported large-scale damage to their orchards.

  • Sudden heatwaves, out-of-season rainfall, and strong dust storms harmed the flowering stage of mango trees.
  • The temperature in some areas went above 47°C, which caused the fruit to drop early or get burned, making them unsuitable for export.
  • According to the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA), mango production this year is expected to be 1.1 million tons, compared to 1.8 million tons last year, showing a loss of about 700,000 tons.
  • South Punjab and Sindh, the main mango-producing regions, are the most affected.

Waheed Ahmed, the Patron-in-Chief of PFVA, said:

“Climate change is now directly impacting our fruit production. We need urgent steps from the government to protect our agriculture and exports.”

Many farmers in areas like Multan and Mirpurkhas said the mango flowering season started too early this year due to unexpected heat, which affected the fruit quality and quantity.

Problems for mango exporters has also risen due to ongoing israel-iran war.

  • Iran is one of the largest importers of Pakistani mangoes, especially the Sindhri variety, which is very popular among Iranian consumers.
  • Due to the conflict, border issues and security risks have made it difficult for Pakistani traders to send mango shipments to Iran.
  • Last year, Pakistan exported around 30,000 tons of mangoes to Iran. This year, that number might fall to 15,000–18,000 tons.

Because of lower production and trade issues, Pakistan has reduced its mango export target:

  • 2024 Export Total: 125,000 tons
  • 2025 Target: 80,000–90,000 tons

Even other markets like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UK are receiving fewer mangoes due to the limited supply and higher freight charges.
