The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has announced that France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are ready to offer comprehensive diplomatic talks to Iran.
According to international media reports, President Macron made this announcement during a media briefing held on Friday in Paris at a defense exhibition.
As part of this diplomatic effort, a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, will take place in Geneva, where top European diplomats will also participate. These include:
- Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs,
- Jean-Noël Barrot, French Foreign Minister,
- David Lammy, UK Foreign Secretary,
- Joan Wadephul, German Foreign Minister.
President Macron stated that the three European countries will formally present Iran with an offer for full diplomatic and technical-level negotiations. The main aim of this offer is to bring Iran back to the nuclear deal negotiations.
Macron emphasized that the top priorities of these talks will include:
- Iran’s return to the nuclear agreement,
- Halting Iran’s uranium enrichment and nuclear-related activities,
- Restricting Iran’s ballistic missile program, and
- Ending financial support for militant groups.
President Macron also gave a clear warning that the possibility of Iran developing nuclear weapons must be taken seriously.
He stressed that the international community must not show any leniency when it comes to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear arms.
According to diplomatic sources in France, the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has been briefed on the European plan for the Geneva talks.
These sources confirmed that Rubio expressed the United States is fully prepared to engage in direct talks with Iran at any time.
Additionally, both the European and American sides agreed to reconnect later on Friday, after the Geneva meeting, to discuss the outcomes and possible next steps.
The coming days will be crucial in determining how Iran responds to this offer for comprehensive negotiations.
