Major Islamic Festivals in Pakistan

1. Eid-ul-Fitr

Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most important festivals for Muslims in Pakistan. It is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. On this day, Muslims gather for special prayers, wear new clothes, give Zakat al-Fitr to the needy, and enjoy sweet dishes like sheer khurma. Children receive “Eidi” in the form of gifts or money.

2. Eid-ul-Adha

Eid-ul-Adha, commonly referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion and readiness to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah’s command. Muslims perform Qurbani (sacrifice of animals), and the meat is shared among family, friends, and the poor.

3. Milad-un-Nabi

This occasion celebrates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Homes, mosques, and streets are beautifully decorated to mark the celebration. Religious ceremonies feature naat recitals, inspirational talks, and assemblies centered on the life and message of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

4. Shab-e-Barat

Known as the Night of Forgiveness, Shab-e-Barat is observed with prayers, Quran recitation, and acts of charity. People seek forgiveness for their sins and pray for their deceased loved ones.

5. Shab-e-Meraj

This night commemorates the miraculous journey of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens. Special prayers and spiritual gatherings are held across the country.

6. Ashura (10th Muharram)

Observed in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. It is a day of mourning for Shia Muslims and reflection and fasting for Sunnis.

Important National Days of Pakistan

1. Pakistan Day – 23rd March

This day marks the adoption of the Lahore Resolution in 1940, a key step toward the establishment of Pakistan. Military parades, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and patriotic programs are held nationwide.

2. Independence Day – 14th August

Celebrating the day Pakistan gained independence in 1947, this day is marked with national flags, parades, cultural programs, and fireworks. It serves as a reminder of the struggle for freedom.

3. Defence Day – 6th September

This day is observed to honor the bravery and sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces in the 1965 war. Tributes are paid to martyrs, and military exhibitions are organized.

4. Martyrs’ Day – 30th April

Also known as Youm-e-Shuhada, this day honors the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for Pakistan’s safety and sovereignty.

5. Air Force Day – 7th September

Celebrated to acknowledge the role and achievements of the Pakistan Air Force, especially during wartime.

6. Navy Day – 8th September

Pakistan Navy’s contributions to national defense are recognized on this day through special events and tributes.

7. Youm-e-Takbeer – 28th May

This day marks the successful nuclear tests conducted in 1998, making Pakistan a nuclear power. It symbolizes strength and national security.

8. Kashmir Solidarity Day – 5th February

Observed to express support for the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir and their right to self-determination. Rallies and speeches are organized to show unity with Kashmiris.

9. Iqbal Day – 9th November

Celebrated as the birthday of Allama Iqbal, the philosopher-poet and spiritual father of Pakistan. His vision for a separate Muslim homeland is remembered with pride.

10. Quaid-e-Azam Day – 25th December

The birth anniversary of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, is commemorated with events that highlight his leadership and contribution to the nation’s creation.
