Careem is Ending Ride Service in Pakistan – Officially Confirmed

Careem announced officially to shut down its operations in Pakistan from 18 July 2025. The news was confirmed by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Mudassir Sheikha, through an in-app notification and a public post on LinkedIn.
- Careem began its ride service in Pakistan around 2015, quickly becoming a popular and trusted name in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.
- Over the years, it played a major role in changing the transport landscape, offering safe rides, promoting cashless payments, and creating thousands of jobs for drivers (called Captains).
- Even after Uber closed its ride-hailing business in Pakistan in 2022, Careem continued operating.

Careem explained several reasons for this tough decision:
- Economic Issues: Pakistan’s tough economic situation, including inflation and declining currency value, made it hard to continue operating smoothly.
- Increased Competition: New ride-hailing apps like Yango and inDrive have taken a big share of the market, offering cheaper rates.
- Lack of Funding: Due to a global drop in investment for startups, Careem struggled to get more funding to keep the ride service running well.
Mudassir Sheikha called it a “very difficult” decision, saying that they could no longer provide a reliable and quality service under the current conditions.
Final Summary
- Careem’s ride service will officially stop on July 18, 2025.
- All support and wallet refunds will continue until September 18, 2025.
- Careem’s tech office in Pakistan will stay and continue developing digital solutions.
- This is a major change for commuters, especially in big cities, who will now turn to alternatives like inDrive, Yango, or local services.
