Another Wave of Inflation – Ghee and Cooking Oil Prices Surge Again

The rising cost of living in Pakistan continues to trouble citizens, as the prices of ghee and cooking oil — essential items in every kitchen — have once again increased. This time, a Rs. 10 per kilogram hike has been applied to second-tier brands, causing concern among low- and middle-income families.

According to market sources:

  • The wholesale price of ghee and cooking oil has now increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 510 per kg, making it more expensive for shopkeepers to purchase in bulk.
  • A standard 12 kg box of ghee or oil is now selling at Rs. 6,124, compared to its previous price, which was lower by Rs. 120.
  • In retail markets, the new price has climbed to Rs. 520 per kg, which is the rate now being charged to consumers.

This increase is especially painful for daily wage earners and families already struggling to afford essential groceries. Ghee and oil are staple items in Pakistani households, used in nearly every meal, so any price jump directly affects the average family budget.

Manufacturers are defending the latest hike by blaming international factors:

  • Ongoing global conflicts have created uncertainty in the edible oil market.
  • Disruptions in the global supply chain have made it difficult to import raw materials, particularly palm oil, which is used in the production of ghee and cooking oil.

These factors have led to an increase in the cost of production, which manufacturers say has left them with no choice but to raise prices.

Tahir Saqlain Butt, President of the Lahore Kiryana Merchants Association, has strongly opposed this price hike. He believes that many companies are taking unfair advantage of the situation by increasing prices unnecessarily and creating artificial inflation.

He has urged the government to:

  • Launch investigations into the recent price hikes.
  • Take action against companies inflating prices without genuine reasons.
  • Provide relief to consumers who are already burdened by high utility bills, transportation costs, and other essential goods.

In his statement, he said:

“The public is being crushed under the weight of unnecessary price increases. The government must step in and stop companies from playing with people’s livelihoods.”

This unexpected rise in ghee and cooking oil prices is a fresh challenge for millions of families across Pakistan. While companies blame global market conditions, local shopkeepers and consumers believe the increase is unfair and demand strict oversight. Unless steps are taken soon, such price hikes could further worsen the financial strain on already struggling households.
